You most certainly haven not arrived at this web address by typing in the URL printed in our weekly parish newsletter. With me ? The URL is no longer on the newsletter and Choirboy is no longer leading the music liturgy at Most Holy Trinity - it's a long story, however, I was reminded this morning after Mass of the following lyrics to a Coldplay number entitled, 'The hardest part' - I thought that they were rather apt.

Sticking your neb in..........

It was with great disappointment that Choirboy could not connect the phrase 'to stick your neb in' to one of the subjects of the first reading, Nebuchadnezzar. Nebuchadnezzar was king of Babylonia from 605 BC. Shortly before his accession he defeated the Egyptians at Carchemish and brought Palestine and Syria into his empire. Judah revolted, with Egyptian assistance, in 596 and 587–586 BC; on both occasions he captured Jerusalem and took many Hebrews into captivity. He largely rebuilt Babylon and constructed the hanging gardens. Whereas a neb is a nose - I am not even going to comment on the slang derivatives for Babylon !
Try as Choirboy might today, he found it difficult to avoid thinking of the Boney M song 'By the rivers of Babylon' as today's psalm was almost word for word transcribed by Boney M into their kitch, top-selling 70 s number above. It would, I think (even for choirboy) have been a bridge too far to have sung the psalm in the style of Boney M - but then again.....
With an enforced move of the organ for reasons that aren't entirely apparrent, Jimmy and Choirboy were left playing at an awkward angle and out of view. C'est la vie. Muscially we manged a joyful Mass despite Choirboy singing the chorus to our Communion hymn at the wrong time and leading everyone astray. However, we survived and I am not sure many people saw the join.

Today we welcomed back Father Mark after his sojourn in New Zealand. We were minus Jimmy who is sunning himself somewhere hot but we did have a chance to have a muscial first at Holy Trinity. Paul has a new mandolin which was used to great effect in our Crede. It adds another dimension to our music liturgy so with a bit of imagination we can find some other opportunities to utilise this new resource. Next week will be different, Choirboy is away, as are Mary and Kath so tomorrow we will construct an all guitar liturgy led by Jimmy and Paul !

Although Lent isn't specifically a time for being miserable, it helps. At least that was Choirboy's message to the choir in preparation for this 1st Sunday in Lent. Choirboy himself felt fairly miserable as he has a dose of man flu - a good example of this condition can be found here

Today we also said goodbye and thank you to Father Brian who has been standing in for Father Mark while he has been away. Choirboy wishes that he had some of Father Brian's calm and gentle demeanour - he could do with it right now as his eldest has some explaining to do..........nuff said.

Lent is approaching and today Bishop Christopher reminded us of the three pillars of Lent; fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Bishop Christopher wasn't actually at Holy Trinity but we were treated to a pastoral letter read by Father Brian. Writing this blog is a bit like writing a diary, except that generally we want our diaries to be private - hence the title. The blog is getting very few hits (most of them probably accidental) but I will plough on as, like a diary, it is occasionally useful to reflect on what we have done. Musically today we were short of numbers but it was great to see Derek back.

At this point in the liturgical year, we have been hearing about Jesus' healing ministry - today it was the healing of a leper. Jesus charged the man to tell nobody about the miracle, but he couldn't help himself. Father Brian contrasted this with our modern day passivity in the face of a secularist onslaught and general rubbishing of our faith. We were urged to be more robust in the face of some of the insults to our beliefs.

As miserable as sin.........

We were reminded by Father Brian today of some of the difficulties in the Old Testament. This was illustrated by a particularly miserable first reading from the Book of Job. We were also reminded of the Old Testament interpretation of illness and misfortune as punishment for sin/wrong doing. The promise of eternal life through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ has liberated us from this narrow scriptural view.

Musically today we opted for some traditional hymnody as we have been unable to practice for the last few weeks through a combination of weather and illness. Various musicians and choir members are still absent through illness and we wish them a speedy recovery.

Finally we retired to the hall for an auction of unwanted Christmas presents. After reviewing the items for sale Mrs Choirboy was prompted to ask 'which Christmas ?'

Father Brian reminded us today how we can recognise the authority of Jesus' teaching, illuminating his homily with a story gleaned from the internet. This went well which is something that didn't quite happen to our first hymn as choirboy had inadvertently posted the incorrect number at the front and side of Church. At least we had a full compliment of musicians - one organist, five guitarists, two recorder players and a flautist - which was fantastic. We were also flattered to have thanks from a number of visitors who enjoyed our liturgy.

Today Father Brian (who is standing in for Father Mark who we hope is enjoying a well deserved break) reminded us of the background to the first reading in which we heard about Jonah's visit to Niniveh. A well crafted sermon was delivered to a rather empty church - half the choir has obviously gone away as well. At any rate our organist Mary was away, so Kath B stepped admirably up to the plate. Paul was recovering from post pantomime celebrations so it was left to Jimmy and choirboy to lead the guitars of Danny and choirboy minor. Choirboy minimus was absent playing rugby so Mrs Choirboy was similarly absent. A conventional music liturgy completed a serene morning.

The reading from Samuel (today's first reading) that includes the text 'Speak Lord Your servant is listening) is one that has a special meaning for choirboy. He wrote a piece of music based on this reading that he has played at Catechetical Cell Group gatherings as well as Holy Trinity. It was also part of the theme of our Plymouth 150 celebrations (www.plymouth150.blogspot.com) and a recording of this song can be heard here (apologies for the slightly flat vocal - I did it in a hurry !)
Today we also said goodbye to Father Mark who is on holiday for the next 6 weeks - we wish a peacful and joyous break from Newquay.

Our final Sunday of Christmastide was marked by the return of old friends - Louise and Danny (with his guitar). We were, however, short of two guitarists and two wind players. What we lacked in musicians we made up for in enthusiasm and we managed to co-opt Megan to play recorder so all in all it was a successful and joyful liturgy.

The epiphany is the celebration of revelation of Christ to the Gentiles. It is a feast full of symbolic significance and is a reminder of the Church's missionary function.

Musically it was one of the those times when things don't go quite as planned. Our final 'hymn', a re-working of My Sweet Lord, was without the necessary electric guitar or clapping. It was seemingly without appreciation in some parts of the congregation. Choirboy does always try and chose music that is appropriate, prayerful but also joyful. I guess sometimes not everyone feels the same !

Today was a rare day off for Mary our organist and for good reason - it was her 40 th wedding anniversary and, together with her husband Ray, she received a special blessing from Father Mark. How apt on this feast day to see her with her family. Mary's absence left Kath B with the dubious honour of playing the organ and although she was suffering from some sort of viral infection she did marvelously well. Musically it was a traditional post Christmas celebration.

Praying for mothers to be - 4th Advent

Today, the 4th Sunday in Advent is the day when the Church celebrates the trust and faith that Mary had in God - the reading is the well known one where an angel visits Mary to give her the 'Good News'. It is, therefore, the day when we are asked to pray for mothers-to-be. There are plenty of them apparently but none in the Choirboy household ! Muscially today we enjoyed some traditional Christmas fare and Choirboy sang Graham Kendrick's 'Thorns in the straw'. The latter had obviously gone on long enough as far as Father Mark was concerned, for as Choirboy was applying the finishing guitar lick, Father was saying the final blessing. I suspect he was concerned about the time as the Concluding Doxology was replaced (delayed) by the draw for the Parish raffle !

It's Gaudate Sunday - it's an exortation to 'Rejoice'. Why ? Well the answer lies in the fact that very shortly we will be celebrating the birth of Jesus and the wait is nearly over. Deacon Brian talked to us today about Jesus in our midst - would we recognise Him. I suspect not unfortunately.
Today was a day of firsts for the choirboy family as Choirboy minimus made his debut on the alter and Choirboy minor third joined the music group with his guitar. The normal choirboy bench was looking very spartan with only choirboy minor one left during the homily as Mrs Choirboy was taking the childrens' liturgy. Muscially it is clear that the congregation are still learning the latest Mass setting but we will plough on. Friday saw carols at Trerice (an Elizabethan Manor House) which was by all accounts a great success.

A voice in the wilderness

It can sometimes feel that espousing belief in this unbelieving age of immediate gratification that we are voices in the (spiritual ) wildernesss. We were reminded both by Father Mark and in our readings that preparation requires time and patience. Choirboy was somewhat crestfallen to be reminded by St Peter 'That with the Lord a day can mean a thousand years' - Patience has never been one of his greatest virtues !

Musically today we progressed through the second Sunday in Advent with some musical references to John the Baptist as well as our new mass setting. Father Mark also sang the Concluding Rite and although nervous at first soon got into the role and sang very well - we will repeat this in two weeks.

Well, apparrently if you go to Trago Mills or at least the Liskeard branch, there is a a guy (presumably employed by Trago) shouting out how many days and hours of shopping there are left until Christmas and with a leap of poetic (or preaching) licence, Father Mark likened the start of Advent to the beginning of such a countdown. Musically it marked a change for us with a new Mass setting (Newquay Mass #4 penned by choirboy) and a new memorial acclamation (also by choirboy). We have also purloigned our Alleluia from the 70s musical Godspell with a bit of musical adaptation by choirboy.

Today we celebrated the feast of Christ the King and were reminded by Father Mark about the origins of this feast. You can read about it and its originator Pius XI here.

Choirboy was today left with a degree of guitar envy as Jimmy unveiled one of his six new guitars - it's a long story about bartering services. The particular model that he used today was a Crafter , all that was missing were the cowboy boots and stetson. Wow !

Musically we had hoped to sing a version of 'My sweet Lord'. Unfortunately in the absence of sufficient choir members at last weeks rehearsal, we had to change our mind. Maybe later in Advent.

Today we celebrated the feast of All Saints, although the pedants among you will have noticed that the date being the 2 November, we should have been celebrating All Souls ! Nevertheless All Saints it is and we were reminded by Fr Mark that during the papacy of John Paul II more saints were canonised by him than all of his predecessors put together. I guess we all have some idea of what constitutes a saint and for most of us labelling people as saints is neither here nor there - after all we are not the final arbiters of someone's worthiness . So what is the purpose of making saints ? Probably to acknowledge goodness and as an example for the faithful. The process is long and complicated. Few of us have a deep understanding of it. There are books written about the process. It is a controversial and confusing peculiarity of Roman Catholicism. Recent speculation about the proposed beatification of Pius XII has led many within and outside the Church to question the process.

So what about the music ? OK - we had a veritable mixture of styles and musical textures today particularly when choirboy's tin whistle started to sound as though he was strangling a cat during Amazing Grace. It is a tune that evokes string emotions - two comments today were; 'I absolutely love it' and 'I hate Amazing Grace' - heady stuff ! In addition to Jimmy's broken string and Father forgetting the sung Kyrie, it was an eventful morning.

Which is the greatest commandment ?

This is the question asked of Jesus by the Pharisees after he had silenced the Sadducees. Before I give His answer, I'll bet that most of us couldn't really explain who these people were. The image that immediately springs to mind for me is of John Cleese in the film 'Life of Brian' ! And I probably shouldn't own up to seeing that yet alone enjoying it - it does, however, contain in choirboy's view one of the funniest scenes in any film. Back to the subject of these mysterious people who crop up regularly in the scriptures. They seem to provide Jesus with the perfect foil with which to illustrate the divine nature of his ministry. Odd title, odd concept - this was the message from Father Mark on the fate awaiting Catholic converts ! OK - it's out of a necessity in a way for the Church to be unfashionable and unmoving in its beliefs, not simply following the social mores of the day.

The gospel reading had on the other hand both a secular and a spiritual message - 'render unto Caesar'

Musically we survived a depleted congregation, an absent Laura (Choirboy sang the Kyrie), a broken string on Choirboy's guitar (and the disintegration of the offertory hymn), an incorrect number for the final hymn (mea culpa) and a problem with Gill's throat (he was due to be singing a solo) ! Phew....

There was an apt theme to today's gospel as we celebrated John and Frances Whybrow's Diamond wedding anniversary. On a beautiful day, the Church was full with regulars and visitors. We were fewer in number in the choir today as Jimmy and Paul were absent (they were at a charity ball last night - draw your own conclusions) and Choirboy's daughter sat out, tired after spending most of last week in hospital. She is now minus her appendix and judging by her bossy demeanour is on the road to recovery. October is the month of Our Lady and our music liturgy today strongly reflected this.

Last weekend the young people of our diocese (helped by a few oldies) celebrated their faith in joining together for a day of prayer, reflection and song starting at Plymouth Cathedral. Choirboy was fortunate to have been part of this magnificant event and the memory of the Cathedral rocking to the sound of 'Glory, glory I believe' will live with him for a long time. If somehow we can catch the essence of that joy in our parish liturgies then surely we need not worry for the future of our Church. Let's hope so - next stop National Youth Sunday, we'll see if we can give it a go.

This practical and philosophical question is on the one hand easy to answer but challenging at the same time. We used this 26 th Sunday of the year to remember the work of the St Vincent de Paul Society named after Vincent de Paul whose feastday was celebrated yesterday. Choirboy blogged about the SVP this time last year. Once again Helen Connolly told us of the good works that the people who belong to this society do in our own community, quietly, without fanfare and with great humility and love.

Musically today was very Graham Kendrick. Regular readers of this blog will know that Choirboy is a great fan of his but in an effort to balance old and modern we had enough room for the Tantum Ergo - Choirboy likes a bit of Latin too from time to time !

They're at it again - yawn !

They just cannot stop themselves, choirboy minor and choirboy minimus (AKA the Ginger Ninja). The last occasion they decided Church was a good place for a punchup was here. This time Mrs Choirboy was the arbiter of the pugilists' endeavours. A draw having been declared we were able to continue with Mass.

The message from Father Mark today was that 'Those to whom much has been given, much will be expected'. A challenge for us all !

Our music liturgy today concluded with four verses of 'O Lord my God' but really only one was required as Father Mark left the altar like Usain Bolt with Brian in hot pursuit. Why ? The answer was in the fact that there was a parish outing to The Minack Theatre - he had to complete catechism classes before they left and by all accounts he was well and truly into the lesson as those of us left in the Church hit verse 4.

The triumph of the cross

I 'borrowed' this picture from here. An Anglican Church with the same name as ourselves - fitting as apart from our normal mass, today we were able to join with Churches Together in Newquay at a Songs of Praise event at Newquay harbour to mark the end of the annual Fish Festival. Our chosen hymn 'Shine Jesus shine' was somewhat shorter than Graham Kendrick had intended (by one line). The cause of this was, as Mary O'D had predicted, due to lack of proof reading of the printed order of service. The consequence was yours truly and Jimmy completely out of kilter with the congregation which caused us some difficulty which we managed to resolve by end of the final chorus.
Our mass today was interupted by a mobile phone during the consecration (Father Mark said nothing - perhaps he didn't hear it) and finished with a rather risque joke. Sunday's will never cease to amaze and apall sometimes in equal measure - did I mention the Dambuster's March ? Well maybe another time, but just try and imagine singing a hymn to this well known piece of music. Not possible ? Well not quite impossible - we tried it at our Songs of Praise !

BIg brother community ?

In what was something of a first, the programme 'Big Brother' was the focus of Fr Mark's sermon, likening the Big Brother house to a community with all its problems. It was a bit of a mental stretch for Choirboy to imagine that our own community was similar to those in the TV house but we can run with it for a bit - the issue raised was about living together, forgiveness, love and a connection with the psalm - 'Harden not your hearts'. Well you had to be there really but the answer is love and love in the person of Jesus Christ...

With Jimmy's shoulder playing up again last week, a visit to his local physio enabled him to be fit enough, thankfully, to play today. One thing that cannot be repaired is his eyesight which, in common with many of us, is deteriorating. So replete with spectacles he attacked the music liturgy with gusto......

The Church doesn't belong to our priests, bishops or even the Pope - it belongs to God and we are merely the building blocks, small but essential to its wholeness. This was the challenging message from Brian, our Deacon as we draw to the end of our summer season. The Church was almost full for a joyful celebration that musically included something new (Open our eyes to see by Angela Reith, published by CJM) and saw the return of Jimmy (following a rotator cuff tear - it's a shoulder thing) and the arrival of Danny (guitar).

It was all change at Holy Trinity today with the return of choirboy to the music liturgy but the departure (for a week) of Mary with Kath as substitute - Jimmy was absent injured (in injury to the strumming arm). We were told by Father Mark that the message of the gospel was an inclusive one - for all peoples and races and that we should find joy in our faith. I hope that we were able to reflect some of that joy through our music liturgy.

Summer Holiday

Regular readers of this blog (if there are any) will notice that there has been a shortage of posts recently. There is a simple answer - the choirboy clan has been on holiday to foreign parts. The liturgy at Holy Trinity has been in the capable hands of Mary our organist with the help (hopefully) of a few other willing volunteers. I can report from Northern Spain that Churchgoers are enthusiastic singers whereas the French approach appears slightly different (we went to a large Church where a good proportion of the congregation where engaged in activities not related to prayer or participation for a fair proportion of the mass). So feeling (somewhat) renewed we approach the end of the summer looking forward to the next big liturgical event - Christmas ! Hope you have/had a good holiday if you are lucky enough to have one.

Although the weather is telling us otherwise, the fact that our small Church is increasingly full on Sundays, tells us that the holiday season is here. It's a great pleasure to meet all of those holidaymakers who organise liturgy in their home parishes. We had a very contemporary liturgy today and judging by the comments after mass, I think it was enjoyed by the congregation - we hope that it enhanced your participation in the celebration of the mass. The phrase 'reap what you sow' is a familiar one - it is also the end line of Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day', a song that Choirboy hopes to use at some point in the future. The challenge today was wondering what sort of witness we are providing to others, what sort of crop will we produce. I guess that only others can answer that for us.........meanwhile our Sunday celebrations expand to include the large numbers of holidaymakers visiting Newquay. It's fantastic to see our small Church so full. Regular readers will be interested to know that a ceasfire was observed by the younger members of the choirboy family -they simply listened to a reasoned a logical argument and worked out that fighting was pointless (and if you believe that you'll believe anything - Mrs Choirboy has her methods !)

Ding ding round 3

Regular readers of this blog will notice two things, one the absence of the blog for the last two weeks (week 1, pressure of work, week 2, week off) and secondly the similarity to a previous post: - (http://holytrinitymusic.blogspot.com/2008/01/ding-ding-round-2.html)

Today the two protagonists chose the Eucharistic prayer to loose off a few blows, the majority of which were from choirboy minimus who was clearly more up for it than his older brother. I am at a loss to explain the whys and the wherefors of this particular happening - let us hope that like all amateur boxing matches, they only have three rounds ! Today there was a first and a last. The first was a Taize chant sung in Polish by Patrycja and the last was Maz's last appearance at Holy Trinity before she disappears (posted to South Wales). Notwithstanding her work committments (taking her to Afghanistan) she has been with us for the past 4 years - her contributions to our liturgy have been fantastic and one of the aforementioned pugilists has cause to give her thanks as he is the now the proud owner of Maz's clarinet. Thank you for everything Maz.

Apostles - called to serve...

The Apostles we were reminded today were ordinary men. They did, however, do an extraordinary thing. When called by Jesus, they left everything to follow him - such was their belief. Are we listening ? Would we answer the call in the same way ? Are we ready to something extraordinary for Jesus ?

In the musical sense today, fortunately (or unfortunately) nothing extraordinary happened, unless you count one of choirboy's strings breaking during the Agnus Dei. It was the same string which broke no less than a month ago - getting too carried away apparrently. As luck would have it choirboy had a spare guitar in the sacristy (as you do). So in between birthdays (happy birthday Francis) and Father's day, we managed to navigate through a joful liturgy with no Jimmy or Mary but we welcomed back Jess and her flute !

He came to call sinners

Our gospel reading today reminds us that Jesus came to call sinners. This is good news as there cannot be anyone who does not fit into this category. The almost revolutionary nature of this calling by Christ was put into an historical context by Father Mark who reminded us of the multiplicity of rules prevalent in organised religion at the time of Christ. He pointed out that Christ reached beyond all of those regulations (and hierarchical red tape). This was somewhat ironical for Choirboy, the thought that we were hearing this in our own Catholic Church. I think sometimes we forget the true message of the historical Christ and get wrapped up in our own Church's rules and regulations - only a thought ! The Church was rather empty today and the choir severely depleted (the weather was glorious and this is a possible cause). It was slightly frustrating as we had rehearsed some music that most of the congregation were unfamiliar with. Still, there is always next week. MAz was absent with a dislocated knee but we were able to welcome Patrizia who hopefully will sing something for us very soon in Polish !

It was great to welcome back Jimmy and Maz to our celebrations today. Maz unfortunately will be moving on soon as she has been posted elsewhere, but there will always be a place for her clarinet at Holy Trinity. The picture shows what happens when you don't build your house on firm foundations - our readings today were all about building our lives on the firm foundation of the message of the gospel. Choirboy toyed with the idea of using the famous hymn 'Rock of ages' today but instead we chose a Wesley hymn for openers. Traditionally this is the 'Run to the Sun' weekend which usually leaves us with great difficulties in getting to Holy Trinity. Despite or in spite of the rain, the Church was almost full for our celebrations. A thoughtful sermon from our ex-footballer Deacon Brian lifted the dampened spirits of those brave enough to make their way to Holy Trinity. Musically we were without Jimmy again (where are you ?) but we managed to get through our celebrations with the addition of Choirboy's Hail Holy Queen and Air I breathe (made famous by Hillsong). Choirboy was even asked by two visitors whether or not we had a CD of our music - perhaps one for the future.

In a beatiful celebration today we were witnesses to a number of our young parishioners making their First Holy Communion. It was a double celebration as Sunday is the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity - - our patronal feast. The children looked wonderful and a packed church joined in with our joyful liturgy. Mrs Choirboy is responsible for catechising our new Communicants so it was a special day for the Choirboy family. Thanks to John for 'looking after' the Choirboy boys. Musically we mixed old and new and Choirboy reworked Louis Armstrong's 'Wonderful World' to include some more appropriate liturgical words.Hopefully it was enjoyed by all.

50 days after Easter is the feast of Pentecost - the birth of the Church. Ordinary men transformed by the power of the Spirit. As Father Mark put it, the love of the Father poured out for the Son in the form of the Holy Spirit - a power that can transform our lives today. In the liturgical sense, things are happening thick and fast as next week will be our patronal feast and the day that a number of our young parishioners make their First Holy Communion. Yesterday, was first Reconcilliation (confession to us older types). Mrs Choirboy was in attendance as she and Pat A have been the chief catechists for this group. Mrs Choirboy took over from Pat O'C who thankfully is back with us after her illness. We were also blessed with the presence of Father Baruti from Tanzania to tell us first hand of the impact of Tukae (one of our parish charities). We were able to hear how our small efforts are having a big impact in the Tanzanian Highlands. Finally we were all given gifts of the Spirit as mass ended (pieces of paper distributed by the children). Choirboy's youngest must have been blessed for having cycled over a snake this aftern0on which was quietly dozing, he picked it up not once but twice before Choirboy confirmed to him that it was an adder and that it was well and truly alive ! Phew.....

In an emotional (for the choirboy family) service at St Austell, choirboy's only daughter ( a regular member of our music group) was confirmed at St Augustine's at St Austell in addition to a dozen other young people from St Austell, Newquay, Perranporth and St Mawes. Why St Austell ? Well, it's a long story but in the words of Fred Pontin, you need to 'Book early'. In the beautiful Church of St Augustine (you are very lucky, St Austell people), the music groups of Newquay and St Austell combined to produce a liturgy that illuminated our celebrations and also provided some challenging guitar work for Paul and myself- - Jimmy is holding the fort back home. In celebrating confirmation, Bishop Christopher also reminded us of the importance of the feast of the Ascension and reassured the confirmands that the Holy Spirit would guide them to the Father. He also defined Christianity as being about what Christ stood for and how, with the help of the Spirit we should make this the focus of our lives.

The challenging message from Deacon Brian today was 'Can you handle it ?' - that is the message of truth that Easter has delivered, of the risen Christ. Furthermore are we ready to proclaim that truth ? Are we ready to bring the reality of that message to our community, not only within the confines of our Church building but within our local community in Newquay and then throught the county and the country ?

Musically our liturgy followed the post Easter liturgy that we have been using and added more mellow reflections for communion and a rousing Allelulia to finish that went on for a verse longer than planned ! We were also treated to a rousing Amen from young Danny and the noise of his toy guitar punctured the solemn atmosphere much to the amusement of many parishioners. Our choir was depleted with holiday committments and Joyce has been unwell - we hope she is back to full fitness soon !

I am the way

We would have had the beautiful hymn 'I am the way' based on this very well known piece of today's gospel. However, Choirboy was surprised that no one in the choir knew it and it was consigned to the 'one to be learnt' pile. It has in fact been around since the late 70s and it was during Choirboy's youth in the Charismatic Renewal when he first heard it. Written by Mary Barrett, it can be found in Laudate but also in the originnal 'Songs of the Spirit' hymn book. Never mind, we previewed another tune that was probably unfamiliar to most of the congregation - 'Air I breathe' written by Michael Smith is well known within the Christian worship community. Choirboy found it quite by accident on iTunes sung by a worship community in Australia - well worth a listen.

It was a funny day in the musical sense for choirboy on this the 4th Sunday of Easter. Apart from the fact that he forgot a chord change in the Holy Holy, Jimmy's guitar lost its tuning for some reason and no matter what he did it could not be rectified. We were grateful to Kath for stepping in as Mary enjoyed a break and we said goodbye to Veronica for the time being as she returns to Switzerland (she will be back in the summer). A surprise sprinkling of Holy water left us with an unforseen musical gap but our junior members (in this case Jamie) managed to add joy to our closing hymn with the shakers. In the absence of a pastoral letter from the bishop, we were reminded by Father Mark of the importance of prayer in our lives and the purpose of silent reflection - to listen to the Lord.

Our gospel story of Jesus meeting two of the disciples on the road to Emmaus prompted choirboy to think whether or not he recognises the presence of Christ in the world around him. Whilst pondering this thought, Father Mark reminded us of the true living presence of Christ in the Eucharist, present in our Church. He also gave us the bleak statistic that Church attendance has halved in the last 20 years - this is one of choirboy's hobby horses, the connundrum of falling attendance at Church. Too many distractions ? Lack of practice ? Lack of faith ? Don't feel it is relevant ? Not interesting/stimulating ? Certainly in Cornwall, where Catholic schools are few and far between we are at a bit if a disadvantage to start with. A fact that was brought into sharp relief when choirboy visited a brand new Catholic primary school on saturday for a muscial event. Wow !

Choirboy must have been well and truly distracted this morning as he made a hash of the first reading and even forgot the chords to one of his compositions. Still it didn't spoil the enjoyment for a couple from Wigan who thought that the music was fantastic - well done choir !

Wrong number, wrong time

No, the title is not because today is the second Sunday of Easter despite being the first after Easter Sunday. For some time we have been using the Laudate hymnal at Holy Trinity but as we only have one music copy, the musicians have been using the Celebration Hymnal where appropriate. Obviously the hymn numbers are not the same in each book and this is a frequent recipe for confusion. Today was a case in point as choirboy put the wrong Laudate number on the choir's music sheets and on the boards at the front and the side of Church. Fortunatley Mrs Choirboy spotted the error before we launched into the opening number. However, determined not to be saved by his eagle-eyed wife choirboy decided to announce the number for the gospel acclamation (in case of confusion) but gave the completely wrong number and merely enhanced the confusion already present in many people's minds.

The clocks of course went forward last night and although to choirboy's mind not widely publicised, the Church was full and there were only a few regulars missing. Our own Sue, however, failed to make provision and had to sneak in shortly after the start of mass - better late than never Sue !

Finally we have arrived in the liturgical and the spiritual sense. Renewed with the joy of the resurrection we celebrated on Easter Sunday in a Church so gloriously filled that people were on the altar, in the aisles, the sacristy and the confessional. What an act of witness to the risen Lord !

Our Holy week celebrations began on Holy Thursday with the Mass of The Lord's Supper - to choirboy's mind one of the most beautiful and poignant celebrations in the liturgical calender. In a stark contrast to Easter Sunday, the Church was 3/4 full but we enjoyed the liturgy as we marked the beginning of the most important 3 days in our liturgical year. It marked the use of 'Knocking on Heaven's Door' (modified by choirboy and augmented vocally by Jimmy and Paul to great effect) as part of our continuous musical motif over the Easter period. We sang it during the washing of the feet on Holy Thursday, the veneration of the cross on Good Friday and communion on Easter Sunday. 'Will I see You again' is a choirboy composition based on what he imagines St Peter is thinking having denied Christ - it featured some great guitar work by Paul.

In a reflective piece redolant of perhaps a different worship environment, we sang the moving 'More Love, More Power' with great lead guitar from Paul and synthesiser from Choirboy's only (and much loved) daughter, Caitlin - fantastic !

The final countdown

The title is not a prelude to the camp rock hit of the same name by Europe (can you remember anything else by them ?) but to the most important week in our liturgical calender. Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week and Choirboy has lifted the picture from another blog where the picture is headed with the apt title 'The Week that changed the world'). Our liturgy was dominated by the two themes of Palm Sunday - the blessing of the palms and the reading of Our Lord's Passion.
On the musical side of things Mary was well enough to return to the organ (although I have learnt that Ray has been in hospital and is now fortunately recovered). Choirboy once again played the psalm on the organ but I fear it was a bit too much for Father Mark - a bit over/melodramatic. It certainly is a powerful and moving psalm with the despair of the psalmist showing through the words. Perhaps we wil modify it next year ! Now we gear up for the Easter Tridium but we will not be singing the Sanctus or Agnus Dei from the Misa de Angelis at the Vigil. This would be a shame but I must assure you dear readers that the glorious Misa de Angelis has received a reprieve from the butchery that would have befallen it had we tried to sing it - Phew !!!!!
Finally, Paul tells me he is getting a new guitar (everyone should have at least three guitars). This is a great coincidence as choirboy himself is convinced that he needs another guitar and has embarked on the tortuous journey of convincing the redoubtable Mrs Choirboy that this is indeed the case. This will not be an easy journey for choirboy but he is prepared to be strong in the face of adversity.

5th Sunday of Lent - any room will do ?

Whatever you think of the origins of this tale and there is some controversy (http://www.snopes.com/glurge/room.asp), it is a powerful testimony that should make all of us think about the nature of our lives and how we live them.

On the musical front in the absence of Mary who was ill, choirboy had to make a last minute change to the music liturgy. However, despite our depleted numbers our music went well and we sang the psalm which choirboy had set to music for the organ. Let's hope Mary is better next week, thanks to Kevin for the guitar stand (and good luck in Norfolk).

How apt that on this Sunday we heard of the healing of a blind man by Jesus as one of choirboy's offspring has been in hospital and in need of the same divine help. He was swiftly followed into the local hospital by Jimmy's son - the previous week Paul's daughter had been unable to play her bass because of illness. There must be something about playing the guitar at Holy Trinity !

Wierd word but this is the title of a beautiful song written by our own Louise and sung in her own inimitable way as part of our celebration of the 3rd Sunday in Lent. Of course the theme of this song was about surrendering to the will of Our Lord and giving ourselves to Him. Such were the power of Louise's words that at least one member of the congregation was reduced to tears. Accompanying Louise on guitars were choirboy and Paul with Jimmy on the djembi drum. There was a resonance with our gospel reading and Brian's sermon - again the theme being the giving of ourselves to Christ. The map shows Samaria as one of the main characters in today's reading was a Samaritan woman. How sad it is that the names on the map are more familiar to most of us as places associated with conflict rather than the sort of message that Christ gave 2000 years ago in the simple act of talking to a Samaritan woman.

Half way through Lent and we have introduced another 'Newquay' mass setting. Fingers crossed for our new Amen next week. Let's hope choirboy remembers to sing it all !

He might well have said 'Smile Jesus loves you' for it was in using an anecdote from Fr Anthony Barrett that Father Joseph told us that smiling is a universal language. Consequently with a radiant beam he led us through a joyful liturgy on this second Sunday in Lent. The choir and the congregation sang enthusiastically, our new music went well and choirboy went home happy. However, it could have gone completely pear shaped as Father Joseph and Deacon Brian decided to start mass a full 3 minutes eaerly as choirboy was rehearsing the congregation through our new mass setting. We swiftly launched into the opening hymn, albeit with a handful of wrong notes but a deft recovery by Mary saw us safely through to the finish. With the promise of a new song next week by Louise and the hopeful arrival of Helen's bass, the immediate future is looking bright !

Lent - the journey begins...........

We began our Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday and if today was anything to go by, it will be an arduous journey for Choirboy. With Jimmy and Choirboy doing their best to encourage a subdued choir and the congregation deciding en masse not to participate, we kicked off our musical liturgy with Marty Haugen's 'All are welcome'. Choirboy really likes this hymn - its music and its sentiment but I think we needed Marty's help for it did sound a bit limp. Still, with the Kyrie to follow it could only get better - one missed F#m later, Choirboy wasn't too sure. It was left to Father Mark to talk to us about the three strands of Lent - fasting, prayer and almsgiving and to relate a short tale about temptation. Ironically it was just after this tale that Choirboy was sorely tempted to have a rant at a couple talking rather loudly - something that seems increasingly prevalent. Never mind noisy children, it's noisy adults who get me going. Phew......

With a new mass setting for Lent, there were always going to be some issues and Choirboy pulled his new Sanctus before mass as he has re-written it (again). Still we managed to sing the new Angus Dei and we didn't murder 'On Eagle's wings' so it all ended on a high, depsite the fact that the final blessing was like the starting pistol of an olympic race as the Church emptied in the blink of an eye before we had even got to verse 3 of our concluding hymn. Still, there's always next week - how long is Lent again ?

Blaise of glory ?

Today was the feast of St Blaise. Here he is on the left. Blaise is confronting the Roman governor: scene from a stained glass window from the area of Soissons (Picardy, France), early 13th century.

Following mass we had our throats blessed in a rather old and peculiar ceremony which allowed choirboy to offer up a few additional songs whilst the rather slow process unfolded. Knocking on Heaven's Door (plagiarised by Choirby), I can feel You moving in me and Lord I know that You love me were knocked out with gusto by Paul, Jimmy and Choirboy.

Being the last Sunday in Ordinary time before Lent, we were reminded by Bishop Christopher in his pastoral letter that Easter is 'the feast of feasts, the solemnity of solemnities'. So as we prepare to prepare to be the Lord's 'Easter People', we need to revisit the meaning of Easter and review how we live. Not easy !

There was a lot on the religous agenda today, as it is Holocaust Memorial Day, Homelessness Sunday. Indeed last Friday was the end of the week of prayer for Christian unity - a movement which Father Mark reminded us started 100 years ago. It was on this theme that he chose his sermon with the challenge to each of us. 'What did you do last week for Christian unity ?'

Musically we tackled songs both old and new, in English and Latin and even had a Peruvian Gloria accompanied by a djembi drum. Our entrance hymn in fact originates from Hawaii. Diversity reigns in Newquay.

Regular readers of this blog may well remember round 1 of the contest that evolved before mass this weekend. The setting, not quite Maddison Square Garden but pew 3 behind Choirboy's normal seat. In the red corner, our very own Ginja Ninja (choirboy minimus) and in the blue corner the Penbrea Pugulist (choirboy minor). With no Mrs Choirboy to intercede in the normal fraternal Sunday tensions the pugnacious pair let loose a number of body shots that Ricky 'the hitman' Hatton would have been proud of. Not withstanding Choirboy's tension over the music (see blogs passim), blood pressure was in danger of a new record high as it proved difficult to referee this particular contest. With the numbers of punches rising and the beginning of mass approaching, various attempts were made by well meaning onlookers to intercede. However, the terrible twosome were not to be denied their opportunity to heap embarassment onto Choirboy and it was only after he had thrown in his own towel and declared the match a draw that hostilities were halted. With the brooding pair sitting at either end of the pew, it was a brave soul who would have attempted to sit between them.

Meanwhile (#1) - in a far flung corner of the universe (OK - Torquay), Mrs Chorboy was strutting her catechecetical stuff and presenting a major new resource for catechecists - funnily enough to other catechists. This booklet provides resourcses for those catechists and teacher involved in the preparation for First Holy Communion. Choirboy is certain that it requires some wider publicity, so here it is. He does, however, request something of the organisers for next year's conference - please make it on a day other than a Sunday !

Meanwhile (#2) - Deacon Brian taught us the meaning of the phrase 'Ordinary time' and how it was not at all ordinary (and the fact that Choirboy can remember even this small snippet is an achievement for you Brian).

Meanwhile (#3) - Music. With Jimmy out of action (flu and injured shoulder) and Maz supposedly away (but strangely at the back of Church), the surrealness of Choirboy's Sunday was almost complete. We enjoyed a joyous musical celebration of our liturgy ! Phew.....

Baptism and Limbo - what's the connection ?

Well, on the this Sunday when we remember the Baptism of Our Lord, Father Mark asked us to consider where we had got to with regard to a number of misconceptions surrounding our Catholic faith. OK - time for a little theology: -

Limbo was concocted in the 13th century as a solution to the theological conundrum of what happened to babies who died before they were christened. According to doctrine, they could not go to heaven because their original sin had not been expunged by baptism. Yet they had not harmed anyone, so they scarcely deserved purgatory, let alone hell.
Limbo also proved a useful solution to other problems, such as where to put holy people who lived before Christ and who had no chance of baptism.
Pope John Paul II was deeply troubled by limbo and had it dropped from the church's 1992 catechism. He asked the International Theological Commission, which advises the Vatican, to take up the issue.
When he was still a cardinal, Pope Benedict XVI said he was in favour of dropping the concept and on April 22 2007, the advisory body known as the Commission released a document entitled "The Hope of Salvation for Infants Who Die without Being Baptized."
The document stated its conclusion as follows:
'Our conclusion is that the many factors that we have considered above give serious theological and liturgical grounds for hope that unbaptized infants who die will be saved and enjoy the beatific vision. We emphasize that these are reasons for prayerful hope, rather than grounds for sure knowledge. There is much that simply has not been revealed to us. We live by faith and hope in the God of mercy and love who has been revealed to us in Christ, and the Spirit moves us to pray in constant thankfulness and joy.
What has been revealed to us is that the ordinary way of salvation is by the sacrament of baptism. None of the above considerations should be taken as qualifying the necessity of baptism or justifying delay in administering the sacrament. Rather, as we want to reaffirm in conclusion, they provide strong grounds for hope that God will save infants when we have not been able to do for them what we would have wished to do, namely, to baptize them into the faith and life of the Church. '

Despite a broken d string during the kyrie, a series of duff chords in our memorial acclamation and an advent candle that wouldn't light, we embarked on the and of our journey through advent with a joyous celebration. The theme was that of Mary and we listened to Graham Kendrick's 'Thorns in the straw' at communion. The beautiful words of this hymn remind us of the mystery, humility and faith that surrounded her life as the mother of Christ. And so to Christmas and the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ -see you there !

Although these are the words of Benjamin Franklin, Father Mark reminded us that although Advent is a time of preparation we should have been preparing for a much longer period for the coming of Our Lord. In essence, the message of 'are you ready' is one that pervades the entirety of our Advent preparation. Whatever our state of unreadiness there is always the prospect of redemption in the sacrament of reconciliation.

'If only Catholics were as interested as non-Catholics in confession'. We were reminded by Father Mark of the historical basis for this most Catholic of traditions and the opportunities that it offers us in terms of grace, forgiveness and remediation. The Sacrament of reconciliation affords us the chance to prepare more fully for Christ's birth - can we afford not to take it ?

Life of Brian ?

Or should it be life according to Brian. Our deacon, Brian was on hand to deliver the message for the 2 nd Sunday of advent: - Prepare and readiness were his themes while he elegantly painted a picture of what the preparation of Jesus' birth must have been like for Mary and Joseph. We are fortunate to have a deacon in our parish and last weekend Brian celebrated two years of his ordination to the deaconate. Please remember him and all called to serve in your prayers this Christmas. Muscially, choirboy felt rather alone as first Maz and then Jimmy failed to appear. Fortunately Paul was on hand to provide the other half of a scouse duo (although Paul would probably describe Choirboy as a 'woolyback' coming as he does from the Wirral). Father Mark is warming slowly to the 'Concluding Rite'. By Christmas day it will be spot on !

1st Sunday of Advent - Prepare !

If today was your last day on earth would you be proud of what you had achieved ? Would you be ready to meet your maker ? This was the challenge posed by Father Mark on this our first sunday in advent. It was also a musical challenge in that we used plenty of new material. In a change from last year, rather than light the advent candle (which is fortunately or unfortunately not in Laudate) we sang 'In truth we seek' (http://www.myspace.com/holytrinitychoirboy), a choirboy composition that we used for our lenten journey ('This promise is for you'). Finally in a liturgical first, Father Mark sang the Concluding Rite written by choirboy. Although slightly aprehensive and with the beginnings of a cold, he managed to sing almost perfectly - we look forward to hearing this again during our season of advent.

Faithfulness - is there any left ?

With plenty of examples where society is lacking in faithfulness (at home, work, society, relationships), Father Mark used the historical perspective of the inception of the feast of Christ the King to ask us to look at areas of our lives where our fidelity may be challenged. Indeed even before mass had begun, Choirboy's faithfulness to the Christian message was challenged by what he felt was an attack on his musical integrity. Wounded but unbowed, he ploughed on resolutely through the musical programme but did commit some howling chord errors during at least two muscial pieces - sorry folks. Musically we had a first for Holy Trinity, a piece of music by Delirious, a Christian Rock group. Choirboy modified some of the lyrics of 'What a friend I've found' and although his strat was slightly out of tune, Mrs Choirboy assures him that everyone joined in !

In a sermon that took in Bob Dylan (in response to Brian's Peggy Lee), pub quizes and in theological terms, eschatology, Father Mark challenged us in the run up to advent to ask ourselves some difficult questions. With December approaching rapidly, choirboy has had to give some thought to advent liturgical matters but we still managed a joyous mix of the old and the new even in the absence of Paul (on a trip to Merseyside).

Remembrance Sunday. Do you believe in God ? Is that all there is ?

It would seem to be quite difficult to bring these strands together, but Deacon Brian managed it whilst challenging us about our faith. Peggy Lee sang a song in the late 50s entitled 'Is that all there is?' and Brian used this song title to challenge whether or not we truly believed in God, Heaven and the resurrection of the body. Challenging thoughts. I wonder did he know that Peggy Lee had also sung another song 10 years earlier than 'Is that all there is?'. It was called 'Hallelujah, I love him so'. Perhaps this second song title provides the answer to the question that the first one poses.

Our music liturgy reflected the mood of the day and introduced our congregation to two Bernadette Farrell compositions in addtion to some old favorites including a stirring rendition of 'Abide with me'.

'Abide With Me' composed by Henry Francis Lyte in 1847, though the lyrics are usually sung to William Henry Monk's melody, Eventide and this was the tune we used today. Lyte wrote the words to his poem while he lay dying from tuberculosis and lived only three weeks after its completion.

A number of parishioners will have noticed an odd facial growth on Choirboy's face - this is in aid of the Angela Harrison Trust, a charity set up to increase awareness of post natal depression.

Father Mark's theme for today was that of respect - respect for God's House and the fact that we believe that Jesus Christ, body blood, soul and divinity is present in the form of the eucharist in our Church tabernacle. 'We come to Your table' a Choirboy composition echoes this sentiment (http://www.myspace.com/holytrinitychoirboy).

We must at all times be mindful of this truth and conduct ourselves accordingly - not as easy as it sounds sometimes, especially when the junior choirboys are playing up.

Our liturgy today was all the more joyful as we welcomed Maz back safe and sound from Afghanistan. It was great to hear her clarinet ! For the first time in a long while we had electric guitar (Paul) and synthesiser (Caitlin) for the atmospheric 'More love, more power' post communion. Our Gloria had less volume than normal owing to the fact that Choirboy posted the wrong hymn numbers - I guess that sometimes he just has too much on his mind.

Are you a pharisee or a tax collector or perhaps as Deacon Brian observed, a bit of both. The theme of today's sermon reflected the gospel reading and was that of humility - something that Choirboy finds a struggle at times. We should aim to be humble in all that we do so that we may serve God more faithfully. Perhaps we can find this humility in the person of Jesus - an ideal reflected in our post communion hymn, 'The truth we seek'. If we seek the Truth through the person of Jesus Christ, we will find the message for eternal life. A high ideal, but one we can achieve if we reflect the humility of Christ in our daily lives.

According to Father Mark, mission begins at home and not in the far flung places that we sometimes associate with missionaries. His sermon would have had a resonance with his predecessor, Father Stephen who would frequently wax lyrically and not so lyrically about Newquay. So it is to home shores that we must turn and regular readers of this blog will know that Choirboy feels that there is plenty of people close to home that need our missionary zeal.
Our music liturgy today was notable for what was included (a solo from Gil full of passion and a post communion composition by Louise that was very prayerful) and what was missing, Jimmy and his guitar and Danny's top E string !

In case you're wondering whether the theme of today's liturgy was about being an optomist or a pessamist it wasn't. It wasn't about drink in any form either. No the underlying question Father Mark posed to us was 'Are you one of the nine or like the Samaritan who went back'. This searching question (precipitated by the parable of the 1o lepers) was to remind us that me must give thanks to God whenever we can and that prayerful conversation should continue through the good times and the bad - we should thank God for our glass being half full rather than complaining that it is half empty. Easier to say than to do, but with a bit of practice it can become easier....

Today's music liturgy continued our October Marian theme and we welcomed another new guitarist - Danny (not Louise's Danny but an older model belonging to Julie and Robert). Despite the fact that he had no guitar and thought he had lost his music, he agreed to play on borrowed instrument and took a full part in the liturgy. We look forward to hearing his trumpet !

It was great to welcome Ann back to the fold after she had recently been in hospital with a broken hip. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Faith of our fathers - it's mustard.

Our gospel today was the parable of the mustard seed and Deacon Brian preached on the importance of faith and how it can lead us to salvation. Indeed he reminded us of an old Frederick Faber hymn, Faith of Our Fathers ; http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Faith_of_Our_Fathers

Choirboy was reminded that his gift of faith was nurtured by his parents, firstly through Baptism and then through encouragement (sometimes not as gentle as choirboy would have liked) both in word and deed. He realised some time ago of the great responsibility that parenthood brings in terms of fostering this gift and helping our children develop a meaningful relationship with God and His Church. This responsibility is to all around us not just our own children, something which we hope to develop at Holy Trinity.

Musically today we had two Marian hymns and our Saturday evening congregation enjoyed music thanks to Bob our newly seconded alternate organist.

Practical Christianity - 26 th Sunday in Ordinary time

The St Vincent de Paul Society (“SVP”) is an international Christian voluntary organization dedicated to tackling poverty and disadvantage by providing direct practical assistance to anyone in need. It has been active in England & Wales since 1844. Today Helen Connolly of our local SVP branch talked to us about the local work of the SVP in helping the needy - apt as our Gospel reading today was that of Lazarus at the table of the rich man. This Christian message is one of hope for the oppressed, poor and needy of our world, that is that we should love our neighbour wherever he or she may be. Not always an easy thing to do the SVP acts as a conduit for our love for our neighbour. We can show this love not only in a practical way by joining the SVP but also by charitable donation and through prayer. You can read more about the SVP here: -

Musically we were fortunate to have a new guitarist today. Paul will hopefully be joining us for the forseeable future and despite a mishap with his music stand and some wrong chords played correctly by Jimmy, just written wrongly by choirboy, we were able to celebrate in a joyous fashion. Next week sees the return of our organists and hopefully also the start of a music liturgy at the Saturday vigil Mass.

Is it money, ambition, revenge ? What drives you ? Can you leave it behind and follow Christ ?
These challenging questions left food for thought as we celebrated the 25 th Sunday of the Year in typical Holy Trinity style with a mixture of the good, the average and the indifferent. At least that's how it appeared to Choirboy as he announced the wrong number for the communion hymn, left out a guitar riff in Lamb of God and bombed through the last number. Fortunately we had lots of splendid feedback and I really think that our joyous celebration of the liturgy at Holy Trinity is becoming infectious. Now we need to spread a bit beyond the confines of the Church door !

The truly awful pun of the title alludes to the fact that today's gospel included the parable of the lost sheep and secondly that there was a fish festival in Newquay today and Holy Trinity were there in numbers. Father Mark emphasised God's love for us and despite the enormity of His creation our individual uniqueness makes us special in God's eyes. This theme was extended through the hymn 'Meekness and Majesty' which was Holy Trinity's chosen hymn at the Newquay Songs of Praise (not the tele version but an annual event hosted by Churches Together in Newquay). The enormity of God the creator is hard to imagine as we survey his majesty all around us. Contrast this with the humility of God made Man in the person of Jesus. If we can aspire to emulate his humility, then surely people will see the majesty and wonder of God.
The inside of a beer tent would not be everyone's ideal place to praise and worship God but it proved a wonderful environment for some of the people of Newquay to witness to their faith.

Today was not as it happens 'Communications Sunday' but perhaps it could have been 'Miscommunication Sunday'. Choirboy was somewhat flumoxed on his arrival at Church this morning to find new hymn books on the benches. We are fortunate that a mystery benefactor has donated sufficient funds to purchase 200 Laudate Hymnals. Of course this is great news but Choirboy had prepared the liturgy using CFE hymnal and its very different hymn numbers. A migraine-inducing frantic 10 minutes of photocopying followed until all was resolved but even Choirboy minor (#4) managed to make an uncharacteristic dyslexic error with the number of the final hymn which was spotted in time by some eagle-eyed choristers. Sadly our old hymn books are now paper pulp rather than being stored for a rainy day/use by another needy Church.
You may be forgiven for thinking that we may have (following last week's McCartney interlude) had a song by the great songsmith Bob Dylan as part of our celebrations. No, I post the picture to illustrate the news that our Mass times are being altered. Fortunately our 1030 celebration is safe for the moment (for full story go to http://www.holytrinitynewquay.co.uk/). So the times they are a changin but the song remains the same (two song titles in there somewhere).

The musical theme of our celebration for the 22nd Sunday of the year was embodied in music by two of choirboy's favorite musicians. Our opening hymn, Meekness and Majesty by Graham Kendrick recognises the dichotomy of God the Creator and Jesus the man - humble and yet worthy of praise as supreme being. Choirboy has long been a fan of the Beatles and of Paul McCartney whom he sees as the master of melody. Our second piece of music at Communion used McCartney's Let it Be as a template for the message that Jesus is the answer. To what ? Well to absolutely everything - his message has the solution to all of life's questions. How is this so ? This brings us neatly back to the opening hymn which shows that through the humility of Christ we can learn the answers to the questions that life poses for us all. Easier said than done, however, which is why our journey of faith is sometimes long and hard...

Regular readers (if there are any) will have noticed the absence of any blog over the last 3 Sundays. Choirboy and his family have been lucky enough to have had a holiday in the South West of France, enjoying wine, sun and great hospitality. I hope visitors to our Church of the Most Holy Trinity feel as welcome as we were made to feel by Pere Emeric de Rozieres, the parish priest of St Emilion. However, it was with great joy that choirboy rejoined the music ministry which has been managed in his absence most capably by Mary and Jimmy. We were reminded by Father Mark of the 'wholeness' of the gospel story and that as Catholic Christians we should attempt to read the gospels through in their entirety on a regular basis -one for Advent/Lent ?
Our choir today was sadly lacking some regulars and choirboy will be endeavouring to find out where they all are. Our liturgy today was hopefully both joyous and reflective of the wonders of our faith. It included a communion reflection composed by choirboy - 'Lord I know that You love me'

Martha or Mary ?

The question we were asked today was, ' Are you a Martha or a Mary ?' It did not produce an 'I am Spartacus' moment but did enable us to reflect on our priorities not only in our secular lives but particularly in relation to how we choose to live the gospel. Unfortunatley there are very few musical motifs that we can use to illustrate these points but Choirboy used his reflection from the Book of Samuel, 'Speak Lord to me' during Communion to hopefully illuminate some of the themes of our readings today. Our liturgy was the poorer for the absence of Joyce, Gil and Kath - presumably all on holiday and we were greeted with the news that Derek and Ann will be absent for the next 4 weeks. Choirboy, himself is bracing himself for a summer sojurn so we were grateful for the addition of Veronica's guitar and Louise's promise that she will sing a solo in 2 weeks ! With Choirboy's only daughter playing her recorder loud and proud our liturgy had a balance of old and new and hopefully facilitated the worship.

Who is my neighbour ?

Our gospel today centred on that most challenging of questions, "Who is my neighbour ?" The answer to the question posed to Jesus was illustrated by Him in the form of a parable - that of the Good Samaritan. Father Mark used this to challenge us with the very same question phrased in a slightly different but equally challenging way. Our music liturgy though not illuminating this aspect of the liturgy was in all other respects joyful and prayerful. However, Father Mark enquired of choirboy whether he felt the memorial acclamation was too long - he did and this aspect of our liturgy will be subtely altered ! It was great to see Louise playing again - fortunately choirboy brought a spare guitar to mass and Jill B looked after Danny.

Welcome Father Mark

It looks picturesque and, at times, it is beautiful. Unfortunately, Father Mark's first impressions of Newquay as a place to live have not lived up to the picture postcard image. Suffering from a surfeit of surf lodges, Tower Road is not the most peaceful place to live as Father Mark found to his cost ! Still it did not dampen his enthusiasm on this his first Sunday in Newquay (he did in fact pit in an appearance on 29 June for the feast of St Peter and St Paul). The parishioners were heartened to hear of his promise of short sermons but it did leave our children somewhat late to arrive back from their own liturgy ! Our music liturgy was conservative with a small c and we wait to see what the future holds for this aspect of our liturgy. With the welcome return of Jimmy and Kath playing the organ we let loose with the selection as follows: -

Birthday of St John the Baptist

The picture is a representation of the birth and naming of St John the Baptist from a fresco painted in 1313 from the Peruzzi chapel of the Church of Santa Croce, Florence. Our celebration of this feast was led by Fr Brian Stephens and our music contained a number of new hymns. The celebration was tinged with a note of sadness as we said goodbye to Maz who is off to Afghanistan for the next four months. We will miss the sound of her clarinet and her ability to transpose music that she has previously never seen - she will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Choirboy is a big fan of Graham Kendrick and we used one of his compositions as the opening hymn - Meekness and Majesty. It has a lovely keyboard part and the combination of guitar and organ worked particularly well (thank you Mary). The warm forgiveness of God

The theme of today's readings and of our homily from Father Mead was the warmth of God's forgiveness. Father David was saying mass in the absence of, well anyone else - Father Stephen has gone and we await the arrival of Fr Mark O'Keefe in two weeks time. Our choir looked rather theadbare and apart from Mary (fresh from her Scillies sojurn) on the instrumental front was choirboy and his daughter. Nevertheless we enjoyed a joyous celebration with a good mixture of guitar and organ.

Holy Communion/Father Stephen's last mass

In a beautifully poignant ceremony, six of our parish's youngest made their first Holy Communion. In the absence of Mary, Kath provided organ accompaniment and despite her nerves did a fantastic job. Musician wise we were only two guitars but flutes and recorders are back up to full strength (two) but Maz was away preparing for her Afghani sojurn. Choirboy minor, minor, minor, minor made his first Communion today so it was a special event for the choirboy family and Mrs Choirboy's parents who had made the long trek from the North West for the occasion.

Musically we used a number of guitar driven up tempo pieces and slowed for communion and then Choirboy's interpretation of 'Jesus thou art coming'. Our recessional was a hymn sung at Father Stephen's ordination, so it was goodbye and good luck from all at Holy Trinity. It remains to be seen what changes Father Mark wishes to make (if any) to our music liturgy. A rather nervous choirboy will let our many readers know ASAP but in the meantime we have what I suppose we could call an interegnum and next Sunday we will have the pleasure of Father David Mead.

An added irony to the celebrations was Father Stephen's goodbye. Next week is in fatc his last Sunday but he used his sermon today to give thanks and to say goodbye. Our liturgy was animated today by our children who read and performed with great style. Mass was followed by a BBQ and fortunately the weather held off whilst we enjoyed good food, good company and said goodbye and good luck to Father Stephen.

The Church was surprisingly full today for the feast of Pentecost. I say surprisingly for as visitors to Newquay will know, this is the weekend of 'Run to the sun' - an event loved and loathed in equal measure by North Cornwall coast residents. In his third to last 10.30 homily Father Stephen used a wonderful story to remind us of the power of the Spirit and how he 'orchestrates' our lives if we let him. Secondly he urged, that renewed and infused with this power, we should proclaim loudly that Jesus Christ, the Son of God is risen. A powerful call to evangelise the gospel, something as Catholics we are particularly poor at.
Our music liturgy contained, of course, many references to the Spirit and I believe many were uplifted by the liturgy. Many apart from Jimmy who was mysteriously absent - where are you Jimmy?
Finally choirboy received some sad, if not inevitable, news. Maz is to be posted to Afghanistan and leaves in 4 weeks. We will miss her and pray for her safe journey and return to us.

Feast of the Ascension

It seems odd to be celebrating the Feast of the Ascension on a Sunday instead of a Thursday but that is what happened this Sunday. Some cynics (some people might describe choirboy as cynical) would suggest that this is a desparate ploy by the Church to plug the gaps of failing attendances at mass on feasts such as the Ascension - I couldn't possibly say that. Nevertheless, our music liturgy was centred around the Ascension and it was particularly joyous with many people saying how much they had enjoyed the music, so a big thank you to all members of the choir and musicians for your continuing dedication and effort. We are also on the countdown to Father Stephen's departure and his largess knows no bounds as we prepare for new hymn books and an augmented system of amplification.

Derek's loss is our gain.

Derek turned up on Sunday - so what ? Well he had announced that if he was successful in his election as bookkeeper at his local club then he wouldn't be able to attend Sunday morning mass and would fulfil his weekly obligation by going on Saturday evening. Fortunately Derek's loss is the choir's gain. So you will all dear readers be still able to hear Derek's dulcit tones, his shouts of encouragement ('Oill give it five'),tambourine and his effusive duets with Gil. We are truly blessed. It was akin to the return of the prodigal son !

The sixth Sunday of Easter continued with the theme of love elaborated by Brian our Deacon with his usual pithy observations. We had great feedback from visitors and choirboy was able to share some of our music with them.

5th Sunday of Easter - Love

Father Stephen's theme for today was love or rather what we might comprehend as love and what the early christians referred to as agape. Many long theological treatises have been written on this subject which we can essentially paraphrase as follows: -

God is Love, and His love is very different from human love. God's love is unconditional, and it's not based on feelings or emotions. He doesn't love us because we're lovable or because we make Him feel good; He loves us because He is love. He created us to have a loving relationship with Him, and He sacrificed His own Son (who also willingly died for us) to restore that relationship.

The unconditional nature of this love is exemplified by the cross.

Our music liturgy reflected aspects of this wondrous gift and also had a Marian theme, being the first sunday in May. At the end of mass , Father Stephen crowned our statue of Our Lady of Lourdes with a golden crown kindly donated by two parishioners.

Finally choirboy was delighted to share some of his music with fellow music liturgists visiting for the weekend. He hopes to make more music available soon to listen to on the my space links to the left of this blog. To this end he has created a new myspace account, the last link on the left: -

Confirmation 2007 - Saturday 28th April

Regular readers of this blog will notice a gap since choirboy last penned his missive. He was taken a short break with some of the younger choirboy fanily and had the chance to attend St Augustine's in St Austell and enjoy their liturgy whilst at the same time picking up whatever tips he could. They say that a week is a long in politics, well it is certainly a long time in the life of Holy Trinity. Choirboy was only missing one Sunday and Father Stephen has decided to leave - well not quite, the bishop has invited him to leave. We are all slightly shell shocked at this news but wish him well (more later).

Our Sunday liturgy for the 4 th Sunday of Easter was brought forward to the Saturday evening for the confirmation of five of our young people. In a ceremony conducted by Bishop Christopher, the usual Saturday night Holy Trinity crowd got a taste of Sunday mornings in the musical sense - perhaps it confirmed to many parishioners why they go to mass on a Saturday evening ! Musically in addition to the guitars of choirboy and Jimmy, plus a guest appearance by a visiting Peter (guitar), we had Jess' flute and Maz brought her tenor and soprano sax in addition to her clarinet - the combination proved successful and by the tiime we sang 'Walk in the light' the Church was rocking literally - fantastic sound from the musicians and great singing from the choir. A big thank you to you all.

We had a varied liturgy with the theme of the Holy Spirit, including a reflection written by choirboy for the confirmation of his eldest.

2 nd Sunday of Easter

Carravaggio's 'Doubting Thomas' illustrates the main theme of our gospel on this first sunday after Easter known as the 2 nd Sunday of Easter. Despite the minor wobble to morale, the choir was in fine voice and a particularly joyous music liturgy was celebrated by all. Unfortunately Frank's brief stint in the choir appears to be at an end as the demands of his job mean that he cannot attend on Sundays so we will have to make do without his contribution on the 12 string guitar. Jimmy nearly missed the start of mass and then almost dropped his guitar but our liturgy passed off uneventfully apart from some fiddling by choirboy minor (female) and not with her violin - apologies for anyone who was distracted !

Our Easter celebrations started with the vigil service and its emphasis on light and concluded on Sunday morning with an altogether musically different but complimentary celebration. Our vigil service was mostly led on the organ with plenty of unaccompanied singing, whereas our morning service was heavily guitar and woodwind based. Fortunately we were blessed with large numbers in the choir at both masses and a very large congregation on sunday morning which helped lift the celebrations. Choirboy's morning was, however, somewhat spoilt when someone told him that the music was 'a bloody mess' and that it sounded like a 'bazaar'. I wish I could report that this was not upsetting but it was and continues to be a bit of a running sore for choirboy who together with all of the musicians and members of the choir works hard to try and produce a liturgy that is both fit for purpose and spiritually uplifting. That said most weeks, choirboy is flattered and grateful for the thanks of parishioners and visitors alike - he will reflect on this incident and try and grow from it !

Our Easter Tridium celebration started with our Holy Thursday service which included the ceremony of washing of feet which included two of choirboy's youngest. We managed to include some new music - something old (Missa de Angelis, Tantum Ergo) and something new (Bread of life, God to enfold you). Our musical celebrations were led by three six strings guitars, one twelve string, flute, recorder, clarinet and of course organ.

Sunday's liturgy was greatly enhanced by children from the parish enacting a scene that illuminated the story of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. With great skill the children kept the congregation smiling and interested in their tale of a 'wobbly' donkey. And so a packed Holy Trinity was able to celebrate Palm Sunday in great style and set the scene for the coming week with the forthcoming Tridium and dénouement of the Resurrection. Today choirboy performed a first for him - singing the psalm whilst playing the organ. No small feat as he is not really an organist (or a singer I imagine many of you saying at this moment -are there actually many of you ?). Once again we were blessed on the guitar front with three guitarists in addition to a flautist and recorder player and of course the wonderful Mary on the organ - fantastic sound !

Czech it out - 5th Sunday in Lent

It was a day of many welcomes. Welcome to Frank, who is from the Czech Republic. He is working in Newquay for the next few months andfortunately for us is a guitar player. Unfortunately he has no guitar with him, so has had to make do with choirboy's 12 string. He does, however, play bass and as choirboy has just acquired a natty bass guitar (pink) we may persuade him to play that ! Welcome back too to Maz, who has been doing winter survival training in Oberammergau - it's in Bavaria and one would normally expect snow at this time of the year but alas there was none. Oberammergau is famous for its Passion Play which is enacted in the streets of the town every 10 years and has been done so since 1634. It was last performed in 2000, so not long to go till next time ! Finally we welcomed back Father David Mead to Holy Trinity - he was witness to a rather bizarre occurrence before mass when choirboy was asked if he was a convert as he seemed to choose mostly protestant hymns. Father Stephen was off on Deanery business so it was left to Deacon Brian to expound on the VII Commandment - 'thou shall not steal'

The morning after the night before - debauchery !

Our 4th Sunday in Lent was the morning after the Parish dinner and dance. Surprisingly the Church was at regulation fullness but alas as the dinner coincided with St Patrick's night there was at least one musician struggling. Fortunately it wasn't choirboy and as he looked at the shadow of a guitarist standing next to him, he relected on the wisdom of being on the wagon during Lent. Still at least he was there, his green shirt matching his somewhat green complexion. The previous evening Jimmy, Mary and choirboy had 'entertained' revellers at the parish dance with a mixture of traditional Irish pub songs and some newer Christie Moore numbers. It was just a shame that rehearsals were somewhat limited - a fact that was a consequence of the handbagging that persuaded this motley group to perform at all ! Still, it was a great idea and hopefully next year, it will be a bit more structured.

Back to Sunday, the theme of the sermon being debauchery or at least the 6th and 9th comandments. Choirboy can let parishioners now that Father Stephen was only warming up with his 20 minute homily at 0830 mass and that by the 1030 mass, fully warming to his theme he had managed to extend the homily by afull 5 minutes (it's a long story why choirboy heard the homily twice and fortunately it wasn't by order or religious necessity). Unfortunately although our music liturgy reflected the occasion, it made no reference to mothering sunday - humble apologies to all mothers.
